Asambai Samui’s Rhythm Master

Asambai has lived music all his life. His vast experience in the music industry affords him a full spectrum approach to performance art, while his skills and flexibility have allowed him to move beyond the mainstream to create his own distinctive musical style. A consummate collaborator, he has spent the past decade earning the loyalty and support of some of the world’s leading musicians, deejays and producers. He has has worked with big names such as Carl Cox, Sasha, Deep Dish, Eric Morillo, Roger Sanchez, Steve Lawler, Fatboy Slim and Adam F to name but a few. He has also toured extensively, with concerts taking him all over the world to Argentina, Japan, Switzerland, Russia ,Lithuania, China as well as several European and US tours.

From 1994 to 2007, Asambai lived and worked in the music capital Ibiza, where he was event promoter and resident artiste in the internationally renowned hotspots: Pacha, Privilege, Space and Amnesia. He was also the founder member and Artistic Director of an international percussion foundation. During this time he directed several corporate campaigns including projects for Porsche and Heineken. He also participated in numerous prestigious international festival events including Boom festival (Sacred Fire), Womex and the Echternach International.

Since arriving on Koh Samui, Asambai has been managing events and performing regularly at multi-media stage shows, product launches, promotions, live concerts, theme parties, fashion and dance shows. One of his latest collaboration is TRIBADELICA, a fresh, hard hitting musical journey featuring the pooled talents of Asambai and Aubrey Nunn (ex Faithless). Their live performances on bass, percussion and voice travel through influences, pace, cultures, sound and styles, merging soundscapes of Afro Cuban, Brazilian, Indian and Flamenco with grooving electro.

Asambai recently became one of the main name DJs on Radio One Samui, the island’s first English language radio station, with two weekly shows covering a wide range of styles and influences. His mid-week Cool Roots show is an eclectic excursion into some of the genres that have interested Asambai in his musical past —world music, gourmet dub, reggae, trip hop Afro beat, funk and soul. Then on Saturdays, Brazilectro is a combination of authentic time honoured favourites and Latin inspired dance tunes.

Asambai loves what he does and always makes time to work with social outreach projects. His Fantastic Plastic Orchestra project uses recycled percussion instruments in workshops and seminars for school children on Samui. The students are introduced to ecological awareness, learning how to care for the environment while playing music and having fun at the same time.

As a percussionist par excellence, Asambai’s rare feel is his compass, and he cuts through unchartered fields and musical genres. As a producer, has proven his ability to shape and stylise performance projects through intuitive direction and collaboration. Working from his studio in the hills, he continues to produce music that challenges, inspires and appeals to a wide range of listeners.
