Bedroom design

When thinking of bedroom design consider the following points:

Bedroom Proportions

The word “proportions” is often used in the design field. Every interior space used by humans must be suitably proportionate. Therefore, proportions play a major role in the interior design and furniture used in your bedroom. The dimensions of the double bed, it’s height from floor level, the height of wardrobe, the dimensions of dressing table, all matter as far as function and comfort is concerned.

Natural light entering the bedroom

There is no substitute for naturally lit spaces. The sun is the strongest source of light available and also helps to keep the biological balance. It is therefore important that interior spaces benefit from sunlight. Studies show that natural light can penetrate through windows for up to 7 meters. Choosing an appropriate position for your windows, so that they open onto nature, will guarantee a balance between natural and artificial light.

Bedroom ventilation

A free and unobstructed flow of air is a great way to keep the atmosphere in your bedroom cool and clean. This is achievable where bedrooms are located at the corner of the building so that 2 sides of the bedroom have external faces. If it is not possible to install windows in adjacent or opposite locations, a ventilator above the window is advisable. The concept behind the ventilator is simple. The lower half the bedroom is always used by the inhabitants, because of constant use, the air temperature rises and hot air needs an escape route. At such times, ventilators above the window openings play a major role in circulating the flow of air through the room. When the lower portion of the room becomes empty, fresh air from the window replaces it, thus creating a balance.

Clear movement patterns

Every bedroom has certain exit points – the exit to a balcony or terrace, the exit to a toilet or walk-in closet, the exit to a backyard if on the ground floor. If we draw an imaginary line from the entry point to all these exit points, ideally they should not intersect. Since all the other areas are generally occupied with furniture, keeping the inside circulation space clear helps to achieve a comfortable space.

Bedroom accessories

Accessories in a bedroom have significant importance. When all the factors mentioned above are met, a sensitive use of accessories can make a lot of difference to the comfort levels in a bedroom. The first and the most important consideration is the provision of appropriate artificial lighting, with lamps for reading and perhaps dimmer switches to enable mood changes. Choosing the right upholstery and linen is also important. Small details such as curtain rods and bed canopies can make the room more functional, decorative and restful.
