Dream to realty

Like most people who have lived in Asia for many years my wife and I wanted to buy a holiday home we could enjoy and which would also be an investment and maybe a place to retire to one day.

We visited Koh Samui in Thailand back in 1989, a backpackers paradise and stayed in a beach cottage in Chaweng.

It was stunningly beautiful then and we could not have imagined that one day we would own our very own piece of paradise…Years later we started to look for a villa in Thailand.

We often spent our holidays in Phuket and started to look in Kata, on the South side of Phuket in 1993, as we really liked the ambiance at this end of the island.

We spent many wonderful holidays in Mon Tri’s Boathouse and scouted the area for our place in the sun. At this time, there were very few developments in Kata and Phuket generally and to find one we liked and within our price range was difficult.

Eventually, in 2002, we put a deposit on a 3 bedroom Penthouse with a Lanna style Thai roof (off plan) in the area we wanted overlooking Kata Noi beach in Kata, Phuket.

A few weeks later, Adrian went to a property exhibition in Hong Kong for Royal Samui Beach (now rebranded to Karma Samui Resort) and rang me to say that he thought he had found the perfect place for us in Koh Samui. This was a villa rather than a condo built in pavilions Bali style.

Initially, I panicked as we had concentrated our minds on a place in Phuket, even though we had first visited Samui island in 1989.

Within two days, we had decided to purchase Plot No14 in Royal Samui Beach, as we had always wanted a villa rather than a condo and after visiting Samui again, we realised we preferred the boutique atmosphere that Koh Samui offers allowing us to be most places within a fifteen minute drive.

Thinking back on it now, I believe the reason we had originally chosen Kata was because it is a boutique area within Phuket. When we visited we always stayed in that area, but we resented having to drive half an hour or longer to go shopping or to a restaurant in another area.

We were relieved when we got our deposit back from the Phuket property and could not believe our luck, years later, when we found that the condo with a Lanna style roof was not built as described in the plan – but with a flat roof – a lucky escape!
