KANDA Residences Samui Villa 14
For those of you who love interior design…
You will not be disappointed when you arrive at KANDA Residences Samui Villa 14, otherwise, known as the White Villa.
Every room has been carefully thought out and we have tried to balance the amount of furniture we put in with the room size.
Our task was made easier once we had decided on the colour scheme. We knew early on we did not want any colour but white.
My wife liked the idea of a white house before we thought of buying a villa, so we took the bold step to make everything white in the villa’s lounge/dining pavilion.
We regret none of it, as it looks fantastic and works because the villa is very light given its great position and stunning views.
Afterwards, we thought we would have to wear sunglasses because of the glare, but surprisingly, we did not.
What is it about Italian design? We love the clean lines, wonderful materials and the simplicity that comes with great design.
The white theme, exemplified by the white open plan Italian kitchen has been extended to our choice of furniture – all Italian and French designed, which gives a really fresh, light and modern feel.
However, design and function must compliment each other, which meant we wanted to ensure that the chairs and sofa in the dining/living pavilion not only looked good but were also super comfortable and every piece of furniture complemented each other.
White and nothing but white!
The kitchen, all in white, blends in well with the rest of the white furniture. This was intentional as it opens out into the dining/living area.
We planned our own kitchen design and decided on Binova, an Italian design, with Siemens and Miele electrical appliances.
Anyone for a Cappuccino?
Early on, we had decided not to go with the developer’s kitchen design and instead do our own kitchen design, as we wanted to include different appliances such as a built-in coffee machine by Miele and, of course, we wanted all the kitchen cabinets to be white!
We ordered an Italian kitchen design (Binova) from Decor Mart in Bangkok and were very pleased with the professionalism we received during the design phase and the installation of the kitchen cabinets and appliances and, the kitchen looked absolutely fabulous in white!
The living/dining pavilion is where we spend most time. During the day we hang around the kitchen and take in the magnificent view.
The chairs around the glass top dining table, which is designed by Philippe Starck (Flat Egg Silver Glass Table – Driade 2001), are very comfortable and we spend a lot of time sitting here chatting and drinking coffee, which we make in our built-in Miele coffee machine and our friends love it.
In the kitchen island, next to the dining table, we inset a bookshelf so we could select and read without having to move from the dining table – mostly cookery books!
We keep the sliding doors on both sides of this pavilion open to allow for an indoor outdoor feel and it is the perfect place to take in the breathtaking sea views.
The living area is all white too with a large white Italian sofa designed by Antonio Citterio (Simplice Round-backed Sofa – B&B Maxalto).
The sofa’s curved back points towards the kitchen rather than hidden against the wall and acts as a contrast to the rectangular lines of the coffee and dining table.
In front of the sofa is a large white metal frame coffee table in the centre that can hold acres of coffee table books.
Storage is also very important to us, so we chose a white Italian cabinet designed by Lodovico Acerbis (New Concept Stereo/Storage Low Cabinet) to store our glasses, videos and music CD’s.
This cabinet is resting on Perspex stands and has florescent tubes built into it.
At nighttime, it looks as if it is suspended off the ground and provides a great backlight to this side of the room.
After dark we collapse in the sofa, which seats three to four people and is wonderfully comfortable and the prefect place to relax and watch your favourite movie on the 40 Bang & Olufsen television or just drop-off to sleep.
Some days we are not able to move from this pavilion so we order a snack from Padma restaurant, which they bring to our villa. It makes for a perfect end to the day.
The white theme continues…outside
The white theme is continued outside with the white sun loungers by the pool. These sun loungers are made of aircraft aluminium, which makes them very light, but because they are covered in mesh they are very stable in a high wind. We have four sun loungers on the terraced area outside.
The master bedroom has a cathedral ceiling and beautiful silk curtains cascading to the wooden floor and a white king size bed designed by Rodolfo Dordoni (Plaza Bed Flou) facing the balcony, which has a spectacular view of the sea and Koh Matlang, as well as a distant view of the south east part of Koh Samui.
Here you can sit on comfortable cane armchairs and read the morning papers with your tea or coffee if you can get out of bed!
And so to the
This is such a lovely room with a great view across the terrace to the pool and the sea beyond, so we did not want to spoil it by putting in two single beds, which would mean you only used it for sleeping.
Instead it has become our day room, a place to escape the midday sun and take a nap or read: Just draw the blackout curtains and relax.
The white leather chaise in this room is designed by Francesco Binfare (Edra Damier chaiselongue). By tilting the two ends a double chaise longue is obtained, which also allows a “face to face” position for comfortable conversing. At night it can be laid flat and it becomes a queen size bed.
And finally downstairs Say goodbye to White and say hello to Burgundy.
The guest suite is beneath the master bedroom and you approach it through a small garden.
The view from the round table (Simplice Round Breakfast Table, Antonio Citterio B&B Maxalto with Lazy Chairs B&B) is picturesque and tranquil and a great place to sit in the morning eating breakfast or reading the e-mails on your Blackberry.
If you feel like reclining and dont want to do that on the bed (Fat Bed – B&B), then you can lay down on the burgundy coloured B&B chaise.
This chaise is great for reading, taking a nap or just staring at the view. You won’t want to leave home.
All our furniture came from Le Cadre Gallery, Hong Kong.
