Sand between your toes

Looking for a great place to wine and dine and watch the setting sun in Koh Samui? Then go to an intimate beachfront restaurant in Bang Rak overlooking the bay.

OCEAN 11 is a two-storey beachfront restaurant with sand at its doorstep and sounds of the ocean. This is a romantic spot to eat, so early evening and night time is best, but don’t expect to see George Clooney or Brad Pitt!

You enter the restaurant from the car park and walk through a petit ornate Thai garden that leads to the bar and the open air restaurant. The first thing that hits you is the view of the bay.

The tables, although they appear close together, somehow allow an intimacy, which makes it perfect for a romantic dinner. If you want to be more private then book the VIP table in the far corner on the deck by the sea.

The menu is small guaranteeing everything will be freshly cooked. Organic Thai ingredients from Chiang Mai and fresh seafood are bought daily from the local fish market nearby. There is a good choice of international dishes and they have a blackboard with daily specials. The Lamb Rack and Goat’s Cheese starter is a must. Also the soft shell crab is delicious.

The staff are friendly and the service is good and the kitchen staff are able to deal with small orders that are not on the menu.

Eat out on the terrace under the swaying palm trees, then take off your shoes, walk along the beach with your partner and get some sand between your toes!

Ocean 11 Eleven, run by Bernd, a very charming German, only opened in August 2007, but its reputation is already spreading round the island amongst the local ex-pat community.

If you are dining in a group then they can set a table for up to twelve people and can arrange a special menu for you if you give them enough notice. Surprisingly, when there is a large group of people in the restaurant it does not seem to spoil the ambience as the restaurant suggests a family atmosphere.

Unusual for most restaurants, if you pay cash you will get discount and there are no added taxes or service charge. Excellent value for money.

The restaurant is small and if you are on holiday you will be competing with the local ex-pat community for a table, so book ahead to avoid disappointment as many people are turned away who have not booked in advance.
